Liverpool Opens a Winner

It was a big day for Liverpool FC, as the English Premiership began the 2007-08 season today. (I guess you could call it Opening Day, but I don't think they use that term in England.)

They opened the new campaign with a 2-1 victory at Aston Villa. Liverpool led 1-0 throughout a good part of the match, due to an own goal scored by Villa's Martin Laursen. I caught part of the match in the second half on the Fox Soccer Channel live today.

It remained 1-0 throughout most of the second half, until Liverpool's Jamie Carragher accidentally handled the ball in the penalty area. Villa captain Gareth Barry slammed home the penalty to knot it at 1. It looked like Liverpool would finish with a disappointing draw.

But 60 seconds later, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard hit a gorgeous bending free kick from 20 yards to put Liverpool ahead to stay in the 86th minute. Here's the complete story from ESPN Soccernet:

It was a great start to the season from Liverpool, who many feel can win the Premiership title for the first time since 1990. The three other big boys from England, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, all have their home openers on Sunday.

Go Reds!
