We had another fine turnout of Trivia Players for last night's tenth edition of "Facebook Live Trivia Night." And for the third straight week we had the problem of my iPhone freezing in the middle of the TRivia. We actually ended up in the backyard to finish the evening, and I had to hustle as night was falling! One of my neighborhood cats was with me as I completed the Trivia, and I'm sure she got a bang out of it! Last night's high score went to Francine Hamilton, who got 48 points and her second win. My congratulations to her. As far as next Thursday night goes, we'll give it another go from my backyard, and my fingers are crossed that the weather will hold! Trivia Q&A: June 4
Our ninth edition of "Facebook Live Trivia Night" happened last night, with another nice turnout for the Q&A. But unfortunately we had more of the same technical problems we had last Thursday, and I wound up moving twice inside my house to complete the Trivia. I will be doing a test over the weekend, as I'm planning on doing next week's Trivia in another part of my place. (I'll probably end up in the bathroom at some point!) Trivia Q&A: May 28
We had another good turnout of folks for our eighth edition of "Facebook Live Trivia Night." But when the fourth round ended, we had some technical difficulties, so we had to start a second time, and thankfully everyone bore with the problem and stayed. Trivia Q&A: May 21
Our seventh edition of "Facebook Live Trivia Night" was another successful one, as we had about 30 people (and perhaps more at its height) tuned in to play Trivia. It was another night of triumph for Gillian, Joe and the rest of their gang (one of my oldest and loyalest Trivia teams from back in the early 2010s) who got their second win, getting 51 points. Our third edition of "Facebook Live Trivia Night" brought in another big crowd, with the high of 35 watching at the highest point. The night belonged to my old friend and fellow Red Sox fanatic Ruth Montilla and her Aussie boyfriend, who rolled up 45 points and got the win. Trivia Q&A: April 16
Our second edition of "Facebook Live Trivia Night" was another great success, as we had another great turnout of folks last night who took part and played. The highest number I saw at any one time online live was 49. And some old friends from my first stint as Trivia host at Professor Thom's turned up: Joe, Gillian and Mariangela, some of my hardcore Trivia players from the late 2000s and early 2010s. And they were the winners last night, rolling up 50 points using that classic team name "I Wish This Microphone Were a Penis"! Congrats to them on their victory.
We took out the Current Events round, as I figured with this pandemic there isn't a whole lot else going on, so we played just four rounds. I am considering returning to five rounds next Thursday by adding another Special Category. I'll let you all know early next week what we'll be doing.

Trivia Q&A: April 9
Yesterday we had our first "Facebook Live Trivia Night", as the country continues to be in shutdown mode with pandemic still going on. So I went to Facebook and did the Trivia Night I would have done on January 21st. As you all know, I was let go from Professor Thom's the previous day, and I decided to hold that night's Trivia as our first online contest. And we had an overwhelming response, as the high number of folks who tuned in was 57. It was a combination of Trivia players, many of my relatives and friends, and others who joined via some shared links. I can't thank you all enough for turning out for it.
I couldn't grade any papers, as there wasn't any, and we all went on the honor system. Everyone told me their scores after each round, and it was the team of Team Covid Obesity that rolled up 50 points and won the night. We played for fun, and I had such a blast doing it. Playing Pepper: 2020 Boston Red Sox
I had the pleasure of being a part of group of three Red Sox bloggers who took part in "Playing Pepper: 2020 Boston Red Sox." We were asked six questions concerning the club for 2016 by
Daniel Shoptaw, who runs the fine St. Louis Cardinals blog "C70 At The Bat."
Every year Daniel asks bloggers from all 30 teams questions about their teams chances for the upcoming season. This is the seventh straight year I have taken part.
My thanks to Daniel for letting me take part again. Here are the questions and my answers:
C70: Looking for a manager just weeks before spring training isn’t optimal. Will the Red Sox be able to find a suitable replacement for Alex Cora? Should he and the club have parted ways? What do you think will come out of MLB’s investigation of the 2018 squad? (Edit: Strike one to my timing.)
John: The Red Sox really had no other choice than to part ways with Alex Cora. He appears to have had a major role in the Astros chanting scandal, and his position as manager of the Red Sox had been terribly affected. As I write this, his suspension hasn’t been handed down yet, but it should be at least one season. He had to be removed as manager. The choice of Ron Roenicke as a successor to Cora was very wise, as he is a well-respected baseball man who knows the players well, and had a solid record in Milwaukee.
The results of the investigation of the 2018 team is not yet known, but the fact that a number of high profile Sox players are on record as saying there was nothing illicit going on is a marked difference from the Houston investigation, as those players were notoriously silent prior to the punishments handed down. We’ll see what happens.
C70: The other big story this offseason focused on the status of Mookie Betts. Do you think the Red Sox trade him before the end of the year and what kind of package would you want to see them get back? (Edit: Striiiiiiikkkkkkeeee two.)
John: The trade happened, and the team had little choice but to move him. Betts made no secret of the fact he would test free agency after 2020, and every time they attempted to sign him to an extension, he rejected it, including the 10-year, $300 million one. So be it. Betts earned the right to go free agent. I really don’t hold anything against management in this scenario. Betts feels he deserves a deal of more than 10 years, such as the ones that Mike Trout and Bryce Harper got. I think signing ANY player to that long a deal is foolish, and will only be regretted in the long run. I like the trade. Alex Verdugo and Jeter Downs can both be players who the Red Sox can build around in this decade, and Connor Wong instantly became their best catching prospect. We’ll see how it works out down the road.
C70: Is there a prospect in the organization that will make a big impact on the major league squad this season?
John: Alex Verdugo will be under a microscope this season because of the trade. But it will be interesting to see how far Michael Chavis progresses after a solid rookie season. Bobby Dalbec is a highly touted infield prospect who maybe ready for the majors at some point this season. And lefty Darwinzon Hernandez, who saw some time out of the Sox pen in 2019, figures to get quality innings in a setup role.
C70: What are your expectations for 2020? Where do you think they’ll finish in the division?
John: Chris Sale’s elbow problems, which ruined his 2019 season, have cast a cloud on 2020, and if he can’t be counted on this year, it will almost guarantee the Sox won’t be in the postseason again. I feel the Red Sox have to pitch well to win. C70: What’s the main topic Red Sox fans are discussing that maybe isn’t obvious to other teams?
John: The continuing absence of Dustin Pedroia. I see it on many Facebook pages I am on. Those “experts” on their keyboards seem to think it’s in everyone’s best interest that he retire. Well, he’s been a warrior for over a decade and a huge part of two Sox championships, and it is his call when it’s time for him to finally hang it up. I know it’s killing him not to play because of his bad knee. I feel badly for him and have always respected him greatly.
C70: What are you looking forward to most about the coming season?
John: How the team responds to new manager Ron Roenicke. I have to admit it’s been a long time since there’s been so much uncertainty surrounding the Red Sox. They could surprise a lot of people this year by making the playoffs, or they could fall on their faces and finish in fourth. (They won’t finish below the Orioles, will they?)

My thanks to Daniel for letting me take part again. Here are the questions and my answers:
C70: Looking for a manager just weeks before spring training isn’t optimal. Will the Red Sox be able to find a suitable replacement for Alex Cora? Should he and the club have parted ways? What do you think will come out of MLB’s investigation of the 2018 squad? (Edit: Strike one to my timing.)
John: The Red Sox really had no other choice than to part ways with Alex Cora. He appears to have had a major role in the Astros chanting scandal, and his position as manager of the Red Sox had been terribly affected. As I write this, his suspension hasn’t been handed down yet, but it should be at least one season. He had to be removed as manager. The choice of Ron Roenicke as a successor to Cora was very wise, as he is a well-respected baseball man who knows the players well, and had a solid record in Milwaukee.
The results of the investigation of the 2018 team is not yet known, but the fact that a number of high profile Sox players are on record as saying there was nothing illicit going on is a marked difference from the Houston investigation, as those players were notoriously silent prior to the punishments handed down. We’ll see what happens.
C70: The other big story this offseason focused on the status of Mookie Betts. Do you think the Red Sox trade him before the end of the year and what kind of package would you want to see them get back? (Edit: Striiiiiiikkkkkkeeee two.)
John: The trade happened, and the team had little choice but to move him. Betts made no secret of the fact he would test free agency after 2020, and every time they attempted to sign him to an extension, he rejected it, including the 10-year, $300 million one. So be it. Betts earned the right to go free agent. I really don’t hold anything against management in this scenario. Betts feels he deserves a deal of more than 10 years, such as the ones that Mike Trout and Bryce Harper got. I think signing ANY player to that long a deal is foolish, and will only be regretted in the long run. I like the trade. Alex Verdugo and Jeter Downs can both be players who the Red Sox can build around in this decade, and Connor Wong instantly became their best catching prospect. We’ll see how it works out down the road.
C70: Is there a prospect in the organization that will make a big impact on the major league squad this season?
John: Alex Verdugo will be under a microscope this season because of the trade. But it will be interesting to see how far Michael Chavis progresses after a solid rookie season. Bobby Dalbec is a highly touted infield prospect who maybe ready for the majors at some point this season. And lefty Darwinzon Hernandez, who saw some time out of the Sox pen in 2019, figures to get quality innings in a setup role.
C70: What are your expectations for 2020? Where do you think they’ll finish in the division?
John: Chris Sale’s elbow problems, which ruined his 2019 season, have cast a cloud on 2020, and if he can’t be counted on this year, it will almost guarantee the Sox won’t be in the postseason again. I feel the Red Sox have to pitch well to win. The End.
Trivia folks: some sad news to pass along to you. I am no longer hosting Trivia at Professor Thom's anymore. I was told by text message last night that my services as host was no longer wanted, as they have decided to bring in some trivia company to host trivia there every week. I'll be honest and say that I knew it was coming.
There was almost no publicity in the place about Trivia Night, and the crowds continued to decrease and decrease. So I guess I was going to take the fall for it and I did yesterday.
I want to thank all of you who supported my second stint at Professor Thom's these past three years. You all made it a joy to host Trivia there. I'm not sure what my next move will be. I may try to find a new bar in Manhattan to host a Trivia Night. I will let all of you know here at the blog and at the Facebook page what I decide to do.

Trivia Q&A: January 14
It was a rainy Tuesday night in New York and we had a small, but enthusiastic turnout for Trivia. The guys from DIMS pulled away by the third round, getting a perfect score in the Q Train lightning round and went on to an comfortable victory, rolling up 52 points. Congratulations to Ken and Darek on their first win of the decade.

We got the decade of the 2020s off to a good start on Tuesday night, as 10 teams were in for Trivia. (I was a bit concerned when we just had a handful of folks in at 8 PM, but it was a late arriving crowd, and it was good to see you all.) The scores on the first two rounds were on the lower side, and we had a rare four-way tie going into the Q Train lightning round. But we had a three teams separated by one point heading into IQ Trivia, and the team of WWIII Vets pulled out a one-point win with 44 points to take the first Trivia Night of 2020. Trivia Q&A: December 17
We closed out Trivia Night for 2019 last night, with another small crowd on a cold and rainy night. We had a good night of Trivia, with good scores for both Christmas rounds. The top three teams were divided by just three points going into IQ Trivia. The scores were unusually low for that round, and that enabled the team in third place, We're Better Than You, to jump over the the top two teams to pull out a one-point victory, with 35 points. Congratulations to Caroline and Kenton on their first Trivia Night victory.
Second place went to The Jingle Bell Hops with 34 points, and we had a tie for third place with 31 points between I Be Da Brains and I'm Here to Keep Trivia Going. We broke the tie with "How many surface square mile is Lake Erie?" The answer is 9,910 square miles, and I'm Here to Keep Trivia Going was closest and won third place.
I want to thank all of you for your support for my Trivia Night in 2019. We are taking the next two Tuesday nights off, as the holidays both fall on those nights. Yuletide Trivia Closes Out 2019
Trivia will be happening this Tuesday night, December 17th at 8:30 PM, with “Christmas Trivia” as the Special Category. It will be seven questions (plus a special bonus question) about the Yuletide holiday in history and pop culture. The Q Train lightning round will be “Christmas Movie and TV Characters Trivia.” I will give you the names of ten famous characters and you have to tell me what Christmas TV or movie special they appeared in. (I will also include the year the special originally aired.)
The Sneak Peek question for this week is:
“How many candles does a Hanukkah menorah hold?”
This will be our final Trivia Night for 2019. We will be taking the next two weeks off for the holidays, and we will return with our first Trivia Night for 2020 on Tuesday, January 7th at 8:30 PM. I hope to see many of you this Tuesday night for another great night of Trivia!

Trivia Q&A: December 10
We had a small crowd in for Trivia on a rainy night in New York City on Tuesday, and a close race between the top three teams. But the guys from DIMS pulled away late and won the night with 42 points. Congrats to Ken, Michael and Darek on their victory. We had a tie for second place between the teams of Quiz-Knows and Prestige Worldwide with 32 points, and we broke the tie with the following question: "How long is the center span of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in terms of overall feet?" The answer is 4,260 feet and Prestige Worldwide was closest to the answer and wound up winning second place.
A reminder that next week's Trivia on December 17th will be our final Trivia Night for 2019. We will take two weeks off for the holidays and return on January 7th at 8:30 PM for our first Trivia Night of 2020.
