Here's an interesting article from the Hauls of Shame web site about an 1875 letter that was written to baseball immortal Harry Wright that was once donated to the New York Public Library and the A.G. Spalding Baseball Collection, but turned up for auction last year.
The letter was among many pulled from the auction when it was suspected they were stolen. Now the letters have been linked to the estate of the late Barry Halper, one-time Yankees minority owner. How he got the letter remains unclear.
An FBI investigation into how the letter, which declared Wright's 1875 Boston club the champions of baseball, as well as other artifacts, was taken from the library and wound up at auction and acquired by Halper, is still on going.
It's definitely worth checking out the article.
