In a rather delicious irony, the Vikings loss to St. Louis Rams yesterday actually kept the Green Bay Packers OUT of the playoffs. There were three ways the Giants could have made the playoffs on Sunday after their win on Saturday night, any one of which would have put them in:
A win by the Dallas Cowboys (they lost to Detroit);
A win by the Chicago Bears (they were beaten by Green Bay);
A win by St. Louis (and they did indeed beat the Vikings).
Well, the third one of course occurred and it put the Giants into the playoffs, rather than Green Bay. (The Giants won the first tiebreaker, strength of schedule.) It was basically a lost year in Minnesota, with the Vikings getting swept by the archrival Packers. But the Vikings final defeat of 2006 kept Green Bay out of the postseason. Small consolation, but one nonetheless.
Happy New Year, Mr. Favre.
