The Red Sox today went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
They left 12 men on base.
So how did they do?
They won 2-1 over the hapless Houston Astros. They did everything humanly possibly to keep Houston in the game, but the Sox finally found a way to win. On a bases loaded walk in the ninth by Kevin Youkilis.
Josh Beckett was superb yet again, going eight innings, allowing just one run and striking out 11. They swept Houston, and concluded the road trip with a 5-4 record and 4 straight wins.
Beckett was also named to the All-Star team before the game, along with David Ortiz, Adrian Gonzalez and Jacoby Ellsbury. Jon Lester and Jonathan Papelbon were both snubbed, but I'm not too broken up that any Red Sox pitchers were passed on. Let them both take some time off and get ready for the second half.
The Mets pulled off a wonderful comeback at Citi Field today, tagging Mariano Rivera with his 4th blown save of 2011 (three more than Papelbon), and they won the game in the 10th, 3-2 over the Yankees. The Red Sox are now 1 1/2 games back as they go into the 4th of July holiday against the Blue Jays at Fenway tomorrow.
And yes, interleague has come to a merciful end for 2011. The Red Sox went 10-8 against the National League, and have the best record of any MLB team in interleague since 2005: 85-41.
I still hate it.
