The best thing I can say about last night's lifeless 2-0 Red Sox loss to the Cubs was I was proud to be a Red Sox fan seeing the deserved standing ovation Jake Arrieta got after leaving the game in the 8th inning. The Fenway Faithful proved again they are the best in baseball.
The Red Sox looked totally dead against Arrieta, who only gave up a walk to Mike Napoli in the fifth inning before Stephen Drew singled with two outs in the 8th.
Two inspiring wins to end the weekend series in New York, and the Red Sox started making me believe a run maybe coming. Silly me.
The offensive ineptitude returned again last night. Take nothing away from Arrieta. He was superb. But he's not exactly Clayton Kershaw.
When the Red Sox were held hitless for six innings a couple of weeks ago by Jesse Chavez in Oakland, I had the strong feeling that SOMEBODY will no-hit this team in 2014. I thought it might be last night, and as early as the third inning.
Last night was the 15th time in the month of June the Red Sox were held to less than 3 runs in a game. That's more than half of their games.
It was also the first game of an important 10-game homestand. And they were nearly no-hit by one of the worst teams in the majors.
Oh brother.
