Today was the deadline for teams and players to avoid arbitration, and once again, Theo Epstein kept a perfect record of never going to a hearing with a Red Sox player since he took over as GM in 2002.
In what could be his final contract with the Red Sox, Jonathan Papelbon and the Sox agreed to a one-year, 412 million deal, avoiding arbitration, as expected.
The other player the Sox avoided arbitration with was Jacoby Ellsbury, and they agreed to a one-year deal for $2.4 million. There's also a bonus clause of $50,000 for Ellsbury should he reach 600 and 700 plate appearances.
And on the football front, Mike Singletary is the new linebackers coach for the Vikings, joining his former Bears teammate Leslie Frazier on his staff. And apparently, the Brett Favre Flying Circus is now over, as he officially filed his retirement papers with the NFL yesterday.
I know, I know. He's done that before. But I think this is finally The End. We'll see.
