Yes, Adrian Beltre went 0-for-3 with a strikeout last night in Chicago, and pocketed a cool $5 million. That's because his option kicked in, when he reached 640 plate appearances. His one-year deal for $5 million in effect doubled with that goal reached. I've never had a problem with incentive clauses like that, and he certainly deserves the cash, with the banner season he's had in 2010.
But it was a very disappointing night for Jon Lester, as he was rocked by the White Sox for eight runs in just over four innings. Paul Konerko hit a grand slam off him, the first Lester ever surrendered in his career, and his quest for 20 wins came to a tough end.
But it doesn't ruin what was a terrific year for Lester. He ends it at 19-9, and a 3.25 ERA. He struck out 225 in 208 innings. He's got a strong shot at the Cy Young Award, in what will be a crowded field.
