I Hope the US Team Sees This Video Before the Gold Medal Game

A cool recreation of Herb Brooks' legendary speech to his troops before the USA-USSR Olympic hockey game in 1980, as done by a four-year-old boy named Rizzo. Enjoy.

Go get 'em USA! Rizzo demands it!!

  2. That Kurt Russell speech in "Miracle" was magic. The US Hockey team may need a bit of that today.

Canada invented hockey. It is part of their culture and national identity. Playing the Gold Medal game in Vancouver presents an expectation that Canada will win.

The man who built the US team is Brian Burke. He is the GM of The Toronto Maple Leafs. Imagine a hockey press as crazed as The New York tabloids with fans to match that. US coach Ron Wilson is also coach of those same Maple Leafs. The problem is that their NHL team is one of the worst in the that league.

So, of course, many thought that Burke and Wilson are crazy. Burke because he did not use some of the best players and Wilson because it was thought the guy could not coach. There were accusations that Wilson had an NHL job only because Brian Burke made Wilson coach of the national team. Ron Wilson has redeemed himself with a great coach job and well Mr. Burke made some good choices for his players. All those two, and 23 other guys, want to do is take down Canada for everything on their home ice in the game that Canada invented.

Today is the 50th anniversary of The USA winning the 1960 hockey gold medal against Canada. There is a great hockey rivalry between America and her northern neighbor. However until last week, The US last beat Canada on this date in 1960.

So, expect America to pull out those throwback 1960 jerseys and that ice might melt.

and in conclusion, I offer a benediction I found somewhere and altered a bit to offer hope to The Red, White, and Blue.

"Our Father, who art in Minnesota , hockey be thy name. Thy will be done, GOLD to be WON on ICE as well as IN THE STANDS. Give us this day, our hockey sticks, and forgive us our penalties, as we forgive those who crosscheck against us. Lead us not into elimination, but deliver us to victory, in the name of the fans, The US of A, and the HOLY PUCK. AMEN!"

    Go get 'em boys!!!

  3. My pleasure, Peter. Thanks for "Lord Stanley's Prayer," Eddie!

BTW, Terry Francona played "Miracle" to the Red Sox before Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS. Maybe Ron Wilson should show it to his boys before today's game...

  4. Great game today - disappointed in ending but still overall very happy. My hockey interest has been significantly increased. Hope Gary Bettman still allows NHL dudes to play in Olympics - it is a great promo
