Let's Talk Money

My friend Adam sent me a list of the top ten payrolls in baseball for 2009. The Red Sox are down to sixth. (The payroll obviously declined with Manny Ramirez and Curt Schilling coming off and no huge salaries taking their place.) The New York clubs are at the top, with the behemoths from the Bronx topping the Mets by over $67 million.

Here are the top 10 Opening Day payrolls, according to Cot's Baseball Contracts. These numbers include bonuses and money owed former players.

    As much as I try to avoid the economics part of baseball, a list like this is interesting. Sort of surprised to see the Tigers coming in at 4th.

    Tigers have plenty of underachieving players on their payroll, and 2008 was a disaster for them financially, and 2009 maybe no better.
