Emil "Buzzie" Bavasi, the longtime general manager of the Dodgers, both in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, died at his home in La Jolla, California yesterday of respiratory failure. He was 93 years old. He was one of the last living connections to the Dodgers in Brooklyn, and served the club for nearly 30 years.
It's a shame that Mr. Bavasi was not elected to the Hall of Fame, while his nemesis, Walter O'Malley, was just inducted last year. He was also the first GM of the San Diego Padres, and also ran the California Angels in the 1970s. His son Bill is currently the GM of the Seattle Mariners.
My friend Chris had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Bavasi earlier this year, and said he was a joy to talk with. Chris has a nice tribute to him on his blog today, The Professor's Sox.
My sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Bavasi. He will be missed.
