Another awful gut-wrenching loss on this road trip for the Red Sox, on Friday night in Minnesota.
You can lay the blame for this one getting away at the feet of many.
Jonathan Papelbon blew his second straight save opportunity. He wasn't exactly battered in the ninth with a 6-5 lead against the Twins. But he didn't slam the door again, and an awful walk to a guy who simply doesn't walk, Carlos Gomez, with two outs set the stage for Mike Lamb to hit a ball off the end of his bat to drive in two runs. It was only the fourth time Gomez has walked this season.
Julio Lugo cost the Red Sox once again tonight, muffing an easy grounder off the bat of Gomez that would have ended the second inning. But as soon as it happened, you just knew it would lead to something. And it did, as Brendan Harris singled in two runs to make it, 4-2. For those of you scoring at home, Lugo now has an eye-popping 11 errors already. Five more than David Eckstein, who is second in the league in errors for a shortstop.
Not a great outing for Jon Lester, but he left in the sixth with the lead, and the bullpen kept the lead until the ninth. But not to be overlooked is the Red Sox offense, who wasted many opportunities to add on to the lead, as they left two in the seventh and the ninth, and 11 in total.
I know it's a long season, but it's nights like this that royally piss me off.
