It was another night of the Red Sox looking like they were swinging with holes in their bats, as they were shutout for the second time in four games, 3-0, at Fenway by AJ Burnett and the Toronto Blue Jays last night.
Tim Wakefield didn't pitch all that badly, allowing three runs in seven innings, but the Sox couldn't figure out Burnett, who is now 4-0 lifetime against the Red Sox.
In the last 54 innings, the Sox have scored just a meager 5 runs, going back to the three-run second inning last Friday night at Tampa. They haven't had a multiple run inning since. The pitching on the other hand, has allowed just 13 runs over the same span. And they have lost four of those six games.
There was some fireworks near the end of the game, as BJ Ryan was called for a balk on what was thought to be the final out of the game. Coco Crisp flied out, but ump Bruce Dreckman said Ryan didn't come to a full stop. Coco then singled, and thoughts of miracle comeback started dancing in the heads of the Fenway faithful. But Jed Lowrie got caught looking at a 3-2 pitch and it was over.
Tampa Bay comes to Fenway tonight, and they are percentage points in first over the Sox. Who would have guessed that on May 2 that would be even a remote possibility?
