Drew's Heroics Not Enough

Last night's game in Toronto, which was the Blue Jays' home opener, looked for the world like it was going to be one of those tight 1-0 games. It was a pitcher's duel between Tim Wakefield and Shaun Marcum. Wake looked good, but the Sox bats were rather silent, and Kevin Cash had the only Red Sox hit until the seventh. It was 0-0 until the sixth, when Matt Stairs took Wakefield deep. Then the wheels came off, the Jays scored two more runs and it could have been more, but Wake got a double play with the bases loaded to keep it at 3-0.

J.D. Drew looked like he was up to his old tricks, having struck out the first two times up. But with two on, he took a Marcum pitch over the right field wall to make it a brand new game.

But the bullpen trio of David Aardsma, Javier Lopez and Manny Delcarmen gave it right back, as Toronto scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth to give the Blue Jays the win and drop the Red Sox to a 3-2 record. Clay Buchholz makes his first start of the year for the Sox today against the Jays. But due to MLB and their silly rules, I can't see the game, as it won't be telecast outside New England. It's a 1 PM start, and it can only be seen on NESN in the Red Sox' TV market, due to the Fox exclusivity rule. (As my buddy Steve is fond of saying: "Fox ruins baseball.")

For my friends and I at Thom's, the only comfort was watching the Tampa Bay Rays pound Ian Kennedy and the Yankees, 13-4, at Yankee Stadium. (That LaTroy Hawkins was some pickup, eh guys?)

BTW, I like those powder blue throwback uniforms the Jays were wearing last night (and I read they'll be wearing those for every Friday night home game). Those were the ones they wore when they started out as a franchise in the late 1970s. I like them better than the dull ones they wear now.
