A Red Sox Championship Doesn't Make the Cut

The New York Daily News had its Top 10 sports stories of the year in their paper today. Most, but not all of the stories, had a New York slant to them as you'd expect. Here is their list:

1. The Mitchell Report
2. Torre's Farewell
3. Bonds' Record, and Record?
4. Mets Fall Apart
5. A-Rod Being A-Rod
6. Debacle On 33rd Street (Knicks)
7. Bad Newz for NFL (Michael Vick)
8. Bye-bye, I-Man
9. They're Not Done Yet (Yankees comeback)
10. News Catches Ankiel

Here is the story from the News: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/2007/12/26/2007-12-26_2007_a_year_to_forget_in_sports-3.html

The first thing I noticed on this: where is the Red Sox' second World Series championship in four years listed? Their great comeback from 3-1 down in ALCS, and winning seven in a row to the title? It's not a New York-only list, as they included Barry Bonds, Rick Ankiel and Michael Vick on this list. But the Red Sox not being on this list can be looked upon as a good thing, as I guess the Red Sox winning a World Series is now viewed by the News as old hat.

And thank God for that.

  1. The team with the highest payroll by far was able to somehow, miraculously win the wild card and then lose in the first round. What a story. WTF? It's not like the league penalized them, causing them to start out way down in the standings.

  2. Such a feelgood story, eh Jere? Jon Lester's cancer comeback to win Game 4 of the World Series just can't hold a candle to it I guess.

  4. A Yankees "comeback" made it? What exactly did they come back from? They still lost the division and were bounced again in the first round of the playoffs.

And it's not like they had to fight for the WC either. Both Seattle and Detroit fell apart and Toronto fell 11 games back.

If you wanna talk comebacks, throw the Rockies up on there. Their comeback was much more impressive and they weren't favorites to make the playoffs at the beginning of the year.

  5. Very good point, Ethan. The News thought that the Yankees coming back from 14 1/2 games to win the Wild Card, only to take a hike in the ALDS again was bigger than the Sox title or the amazing Rockies charge to the NL pennant. Go figure.
