Barry Bonds hit home run number 756 tonight in San Francisco off former Mets pitcher and current Washington Nationals starter Mike Bacsik.
It's over. Finally.
The best part of the home run tonight was in the ten-minute ceremony that happened after the home run. The centerfield scoreboard had a short video tribute from Hank Aaron. Hank took the high road and offered Bonds all the best on breaking his 33-year-old record. (The above is a baseball card from 1975 of Hammerin' Hank, one of which I actually have.) It was a classy gesture from a classy individual, and the best part of the whole night. Bonds could take a lesson from that. (And also, security was shown escorting the guy who caught the home run. I thought I saw him wearing a Mets road jersey. Turns out he was a Mets fan from Queens named Matt Murphy. His nickname wouldn't happen to be 'Guitar', would it?)
Sorry, I could never root for Bonds. I can't say I'm happy for him.
I just feel sadness for Hank Aaron.
I like the Yankee/Sox countdown clock. But, and I hate to say this, they are playing great baseball, for more than two months now.
ReplyDeleteI got emotional upon seeing Willie Mays & Henry Aaron, as Mays looked so old:
ReplyDeleteBut not joyous over Barry*
A-Rod (I never thought I'd say this, but God bless him) will overtake Bonds in about 7 years and then we can put this whole mess aside.
ReplyDeleteI'd wait on A-Rod. Remember, Jose Canseco is promising something "juicy" (pardon the pun) about him in the next book he's putting out. Remember that people laughed at Canseco when he said he'd write a book that would blow the roof off of MLB. No one laughing at him now.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Slappy had anything to do with steroids as well...
Peter: the Yankees are about to enter the hard part of their schedule. It took a monsterous streak for them to get this close. The Red Sox also have a rather easy schedule the final six weeks.
