Daisuke Matsuzaka made his Major League debut today in the cold against the Kansas City Royals, and he gave the Sox seven terrific innings, striking out 10 and allowing just a sixth inning homer to David DeJesus, as the Red Sox went on to a 4-1 win. He gave up a single to DeJesus to start the game, walked one other batter, and then got a double play to end the first inning. He settled into a nice groove, ran into some trouble in the sixth, but overall was impressive in his official MLB debut.
The folks watching live back in Japan must have been awfully proud of their native son today.
David Ortiz struck out four times (twice looking), but doubled and scored the third run in the eighth, to give the Red Sox some needed insurance. Jonathan Papelbon looked like the Paps of 2006, striking out two in a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the victory. The Sox bounced back nicely with two wins in Kansas City after the lethargic loss in the opener. Now they move over to Texas for a weekend set with the Rangers.
And were the Mets pretty damn impressive or what in their opening series in St. Louis? They ran roughshod over the Cardinals three straight, outscoring them 20-2. The Mets did everything right, and the Cardinals did nothing. This series makes me wonder whether the Mets have gotten that much better or has St. Louis gotten that much worse. I think it is a combination of the two. The Mets take on the Braves in Atlanta this weekend.
