The Red Sox tonight announced the signings of both J.D. Drew and Julio Lugo to multi-year contracts as free agents. Drew's deal is for five years at a total of $70 million and Lugo signed a four-year contract at a total of $36 million.
What do these signings mean in terms of Manny Ramirez' status? Hard to say for certain, but Terry Francona said on Tuesday that he doesn't think Manny's going anywhere, and since the Dodgers won't deal blue-chip prospects Matt Kemp and Jonathan Broxton in a possible deal, it looks more and more like he may indeed be staying.
Could this be the Red Sox starting lineup on April 3, 2007 in Kansas City?
Lugo SS
Crisp CF
Ortiz DH
Ramirez LF
Drew RF
Lowell 3B
Youkilis 1B
Varitek C
Pedroia 2B
Schilling P
The winter's far from finished, but time will certainly tell.
But in even better news, the word on on Lester appears to be very good. Apparently, his lymphoma has gone into remission, and he's optimistic about being at Spring Training. He still has more chemotherapy to face, but his attitude appears to be excellent.
Godspeed Jon.
Great News On Jon Lester:
ReplyDeleteLugo, reportedly, grew up in Brooklyn;
Drew had better stay healthy, & not be like Nomar.
Manny may be meshugana, but he's our guy & can put that ball in the LF Bleachers in "The Toilet" & that's all that matters.
ReplyDeleteDo you think they couldn't have signed Trot to a fair deal, fewer years, at that price? I'm sorry, but I'm a big fan of loyalty. I would much rather see Trot in RF than Drew. I think it sucks when a fellow really seems to want to play his entire career in one city but it doesn't happen.
ReplyDeleteAh, nevermind, maybe the stars will align and he'll still be in a Sox uniform. I'm sure not counting on it, though.
Lugo = They should have kept Cabrera long ago.
Boy, I'm a cheery sort today, huh? Sorry! GREAT news concerning Lester. I sure hope he makes it back.
Everyone's comparing Lugo to the OC "mistake." I think the FO knows they blew it with Cabrera, and that signing Lugo will rectify that. They knew they had to upgrade the offense at SS, while the defense will take a hit. I just hope Lugo gets off to a good start...
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see Trot stay, but I doubt it now that Drew is here and apparently Manny is staying. His terrible power numbers, injuries and declining range has scared just about everyone off.
We all have those days Suldog (you should seen me yesterday). But the return of Jon Lester is such wonderful news. Hopefully he will stay healthy and enjoy a long life..
Please don't hit Crisp 2nd...move Youk to second, Tek to seventh and Crisp to 8th. Better yet, just move Crisp...anywhere...
ReplyDeleteDutch aka Adam: I'll see you in "Kansas City"....
ReplyDeleteMatty: Coco did hit second in Cleveland behind Grady Sizemore and was very successful. But if Youk is in the 2 hole, that's fine with me...
