More Classless Junk For The Evil Empire

My friend Joe sent me an email this morning about how MLB.com is hawking these anti-Red Sox shirts over at their web site. On the front is a Yankee logo with the words, "Got Postseason" on the front, with the Red Sox logo on the back of the shirt, with what appears to be a headstone with the words "RIP 2006 Season."

It's pretty stupid, but at worst, it's rather insensitive, considering Jon Lester's current battle with lymphoma.

Boy, if I were a Yankee fan, I'd be REALLY proud to wear that shirt. And wow, yet another clever Yankee t-shirt answering the Red Sox and their fans back. Just like those wildly popular "Yankees Universe" shirts. And those "Got Rings" shirts. You know the ones, those truly obnoxious shirts to remind the whole world that the Yankees lead everyone in how many rings they've won. Ugh.

Joe points out that he doesn't remember MLB.com selling any "Yankees Choke" shirts after their historic postseason collapse of 2004. I also don't remember seeing them there either. But they will hawk this kind of shirt. Hey, if they want to sell division champions shirts, fine. But of course, they wouldn't be the Yankees without pouring some salt into some open wounds.

What pathetic crap.

  1. & since MLB sanctions this BS, how much credibility does MLB have, if they allow the Yankees to do ANYTHING they want.

  2. Let's see if MLB will sell this shirt:

"Got HGH" on the front with the NY Yankees Insignia

  3. I just don't see the point about getting worked up about this, but judging from everyone else's blogs today, I must be the only one. They can wipe their tears on those t's when they go out of the playoffs...it's just a damn shirt. But, I guess I'm in the minority on this here t-shirt-gate thing...

  4. Oh I'm not busting a gut over it, Matty. I just thought it was stupid, classless and a bit insensitive. But that is par for the course with many Yankee fans. And I just thought I'd let my readers, as well as other Red Sox fans know about this.

It's not THAT big a deal really...

  5. It's NOT a big deal, but....MLB is always protective of their image, and the rules they put down as far as liscensing and distributing images are strict. How this piece of BS got through is beyond me. Credibility. Yeah, right. And this is not any form of sour grapes from me. The Yankees finished with the best record in the AL. Deservedly so. That will change in '07. And their season now, the post season? It can be a fleeting memory in a week. I predict weather, not wins and losses. But..............I can see writing on the wall.

  6. I didn't think you were hyperventilating about this, John; I have a couple fairly vulgar anti-yanks shirts in my closet, but the difference is that they are not officially licensed by MLB. I'm pretty sure MLB does this shit just to incense Sox fans, to stoke the flames of "The greatest rivalry in sports," (which it's not by the way- conversation for another day) and to increase interest in next season's Yanks-Sox games. It's just another way to make sure everyone's paying attention and of course, spending money on MLB.

  7. Good points, Peter and Matty. The bottom line in this whole thing is the bottom line. MLB is just trying to make money, and exploiting the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry any way it can.
