It was a light night at Trivia on Tuesday night, as the Memorial Day weekend kept many folks away. But we still a great night of Trivia, as Luis Jimenez of Montauk Brewing Co. was in Professor Thom's and gave out t-shirts, hats and other swag from his company. My thanks to him and his company. And we did "Montauk Trivia" as the Special Category and that went very well. But it was once again, the night for the boys from DIMS, as they led throughout the night, getting 42 points and getting the win. Congrats again to Ken, Michael and Darek on their win.
Second place went to Closing Early For Racial Bias Training (who also won Best Team Name) with 32 points, and third place went to Bleached Massholes with 30 points.
A special note about next week: We will NOT be doing Trivia next week, as I will be away doing a movie, so our next Trivia Night will be in two weeks, on Tuesday night, June 12th at 8:30 PM. Hope to see many of you then!

"I'm Keith Hernandez"
There are dozens of books that come out every year about baseball, including memoirs from older players recalling their glory days. But it's hard to find one like "I'm Keith Hernandez", (Little, Brown) in which the great Mets and Cardinals first baseman recalls some of his glorious times that led to him being an NL MVP and a two-time World Series champion.
But if you're a Mets fan looking for more inside stuff about the 1986 World Series champions, you won't find it here. Hernandez consciously avoids that discussion, which he feels has been done to death in other books. And he also avoids such things as the other championship team he played in with the Cardinals in 1982, his controversial trade to the Mets the next year, the Pittsburgh drug trials he was a part of in 1985, or his funny role on the TV show "Seinfeld.".
But he still has plenty to tell in this book.
He uses two main timelines to tell his story: his growing up in Northern California with a very demanding father who was obsessed with baseball, and his current day being a respected broadcaster with the Mets. His father was friends with the legendary Stan Musial, and Hernandez talks of the time he and his dad met him at Candlestick Park in 1963. It would come full circle nearly a dozen years later, when Hernandez made his MLB debut there. His father John was a difficult taskmaster as father his influence on the young Keith, and Keith is at once miffed but grateful to his father for pushing in the direction he went.
Hernandez was eventually signed by St. Louis, and tells of the glories of playing minor league ball in the early 1970s. It was filled with bad stadiums, groupies and dodging tornadoes. (Hernandez tells as interesting story what happened to him when jumped into a ditch to avoid a tornado in Oklahoma.) And he also talks about his first forays into the world of drug use, first with marijuana and amphetamines.
The book is actually a fun ride through those early years with Hernandez, long before the world of the Internet, 24-hour news and iPhones everywhere. When Hernandez first makes it up to the Show, it was a bumpy first year for him, as expectations for him being another Stan Musial didn't go as planned. He was sent back to AAA. He credits Cardinals teammates such as Bob Gibson, Lou Brock and Hector Cruz for being a good influence on him, especially Brock, who he still talks about reverantly during Mets broadcasts.
On the other end of the spectrum is Keith's foray into the world of broadcasting, and has nothing but love for his broadcast partners, Gary Cohen and Ron Darling. Hernandez also is pretty open about his "faux pas" committed in his time in the booth, especially the dustup he got into regarding women in the teams' locker rooms.
"I'm Keith Hernandez" isn't just about Keith's career on and off the field, but he gives his views on the current state of the game, like the obsession over sabermetrics, the pace of the game, and the fact the game is getting too one-dimensional in this "Home Run Era." I found Keith to be very honest in this book, and it is really how everything that happened to him before 1980 led up to who he is today.
I highly recommend "I'm Keith Hernandez" (which was just released on May 15) to any baseball fan who enjoys a good baseball bio of a recent baseball great. But if the book is successful, do you think he could coxed into writing another, post-1980? I wouldn't bet against it.

Trivia Q&A: May 22
We had a 13 teams in for Trivia on Tuesday night as we returned to the main floor of Professor Thom's, as there was no Celtics playoff game. It was a spirited crowd really into the Trivia. The night started out with a Current Events round that saw the lowest scores I've ever seen for an opening round, as the highest score was just 4. Sorry I made it so hard, everyone! As the night progressed, we had a good three team race for the top, but the boys from DIMS prevailed, as they had four straight perfect rounds after Current Events and won the night with 51 points. Congrats to Ken, Mike and Darek on their third straight victory.
Next week we will be back on the main floor again, as there are no NBA playoff games scheduled on May 29th.
Second place went to Oh-Yum with 41 points, and third place went to Elotes with 39 points.

Trivia Q&A: May 15
On a night when we had to move back up to the Loft due to the Celtics playoff game, and with rain and thunderstorms in the area late in the day on Tuesday, I really feared we wouldn't have much of a crowd for Trivia. But we filled up the Loft and had 12 teams in. It was another great night for the boys from DIMS, who won the night pretty handily, pulling away after the General Knowledge round, and finished the night with 51 points. Congrats to Ken and Michael on another great victory.
Second place went to Colonel Planet with 44 points, and third place went to Joey Triviani (who also won for Best Team Name) with 39 points.
A reminder that we will back on the main floor next week, as there will be NO Celtics playoff game next Tuesday night. Hope to see many of you then.

Trivia Q&A: May 8
We were back downstairs again last night for Trivia, and we had a good turnout of 13 teams in. And last night it was a special night for the team of DIMS. They missed the question from the first round about the WWE wrestler running for mayor, and it turns out it was the only question they got wrong all night, as they wound up winning the night with 55 points. Congrats to Ken, Michael and Darek on their superb win. (We also had five teams get all five IQ Trivia questions correct, the most I can ever remember doing so well in that round. So after last week when no team got more than two correct, it was a bit easier this week. We'll see what happens next week.)
Second place went to Merkle's Boner with 50 points, and third place went to The John Oliver Koala Chlamyda Ward with 49 points.

Trivia Q&A: May 1
We were back downstairs for Trivia on Tuesday night, as there was no playoff game for either the Celtics or Bruins. We had 10 teams in on a nice night in New York. It was tight throughout the evening, with four teams jockeying for the top with just two points between them. But it was the guys from DIMS who returned to the winner's circle, getting 42 points. They led all night and held on to take the prize. (This was one of the harder IQ rounds I've done in a while, as no one got more than 2 questions right in the round. And no one got the three point question correct. I can't remember that ever happening in the IQ Trivia round.) Congratulations to Ken and Darek on their victory.
Second place went to John Wilkes Booth and the Show Stoppers with 40 points, and third place went to Spring Finally Comes with 39 points.
