King Tried To Screw Felix: Didn't Succeed This Time

Felix Hernandez won the AL Cy Young Award for 2010 today, despite winning just 13 games. He won and it wasn't close, as he far out-distanced David Price, who finished second. C.C. Sabathia finished third, Jon Lester was fourth and Clay Buchholz was sixth.

Hernandez got 21 of the 28 first-place votes, and topped Price by a whopping 56 points.

Because of the heightened interest in this award, the list of voters is below, grouped by which pitcher they listed first on their ballot:

Hernandez: Ken Rosenthal, Fox; Amalie Benjamin, Boston Globe; Michael Silverman, Boston Herald; Erik Boland, Newsday; Joe Smith, St. Petersburg Times; Mark Gonzales, Chicago Tribune; Lynn Henning, Detroit News; John Lowe, Detroit Free Press; Sam Mellinger, Kansas City Star; Joe Posnanski, SI.com; Joe Christensen, Minneapolis Star Tribune; John Shipley, St. Paul Pioneer Press; Hirokazu Higuchi, Chunichi Shimbun (LA); Tim Brown, Yahoo Sports; Jorge Ortiz, USA Today; Ray Ratto, At Large (SF/Oakland); Kirby Arnold, Everett Herald; Larry Stone, Seattle Times; Richard Durrett, At Large (Dallas-Fort Worth); Anthony Andro, Fort Worth Star Telegram; Morgan Campbell, Toronto Star.

Price: Mel Antonen, USA Today; Tony Fabrizio, Tampa Tribune; Phil Rogers, Chicago Tribune; Chris Assenheimer. Elyria (OH) Chronicle.

Sabathia: George King, New York Post; Bob Elliott, Toronto Sun; Sheldon Ocker, Akron Beacon Journal.

Yes, one writer voted Hernandez fifth. And that was the infamous George King of the NY Post, who screwed Pedro Martinez out of the MVP award in 1999 by leaving him off the ballot, using the faulty logic that pitchers don't deserve to be MVP (despite having voted for two pitchers for the same award the previous year).

Hernandez wins the award with the fewest wins ever for a starting pitcher, but he simply dominated in most of the major categories. With any decent support he could have easily won 20 games. Fortunately most writers knew that and gave Hernandez the award.

I'm sure dumbass King and bigger dumbass Murray Chass are not happy men tonight.

George King...not one of my favorite people by a long shot. Petey? He'll always be the best.
